The World Trade Center was built entirely on landfill. More than 425,000 cubic yards of concrete were required to construct the World Trade Center, enough to pave a sidewalk from New York City to Washington, D.C.Īt least seven foundries supplied more than 200,000 tons of structural steel for the construction of the World Trade Center-more steel than was used to build the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in the United States, that connects Staten Island to Brooklyn, New York. The North Tower was completed first in December 1970, followed by the South Tower in July 1971. The Twin Towers began their vertical climb in 1968. Construction on the World Trade Center began on August 5, 1966, but most of the work in the first two years was below street level.
